How to make a map of the countries you have visited
A map of the countries you have visited is the most satisfying souvenir of a lot of travel. There are two ways to get one.
1. Mark them by hand
Pick the countries one by one on a map and watch the count grow. It takes a few minutes and is accurate as long as you remember every trip. You can try it right now: the map on our home page lets you tap or search for countries and shows how many of the world's 195 you have been to, and by continent. What you enter stays in your browser.
2. Let your photos do it
Your phone already knows where you have been. If the Camera app had permission to use your location, each photo stores where it was taken. Reading those places and turning them into countries is what Mundipin does on the iPhone, without typing a thing: it works out the country of each photo on the device with built-in borders and paints your map. The map, the 3D globe, your collection and a card to share are free. Mundipin is coming soon to the App Store.
Tips for a good map
- Decide what counts. A layover, a border crossing and a week are different things. Pick your own rule and keep to it.
- Check borderline places. Territories and disputed regions are counted differently by different lists. Mundipin counts 195 countries.
- Go back to old photos. Older trips are in your library even when you have forgotten them.
If you also need to count days in a country, for Schengen or tax, see the Schengen calculator and the 183-day calculator.
